Documents Required for ITR Filing — the Official List, and the One Thing Nobody Tells You

Search for "documents required for ITR filing" and you get listicles that read like packing lists for a trek. Here is something better: the Income Tax Department's own answer, word for word, and then the one fact about it that most of those listicles bury. You will not be uploading a single one of these documents to the e-filing portal.

The official list, verbatim

From the Income Tax Department's ITR-1 filing FAQs:

"You are required below documents to file ITR: Form 16, Form 16A, Form 26AS, AIS, Pay Slip, Bank Statements, Housing Loan Interest Certificates, House rent receipt (if applicable), Rental Agreement, Receipts for Donation Made, Investment, premium payment receipts - LIC, ULIP etc."

That is the full set for a salaried return. Not every item applies to every person (no home loan means no interest certificate), but if a document exists for you, it belongs in this year's folder.

The part that changes how you prepare

Same FAQ, one answer further down:

"ITR forms are annexure-less forms, so you are not required to attach any document (like proof of investment, TDS certificates) along with your return (whether filed manually or electronically)."

Read that twice, because it reframes the whole checklist. The portal has no upload slot for Form 16. You never attach the rent receipts. Filing an ITR means reading numbers out of these documents and typing them into the return. The documents themselves stay with you.

So why does the department list them at all? Because you need them twice: once at your desk while filling the return, and again, possibly years later, if your return is picked up for assessment or an inquiry, and you are asked to produce the proof behind a deduction you claimed. A deduction you cannot document is a deduction you may lose, with interest. The checklist is really a retention list.

Where each document actually comes from

Gathering goes fastest when you work by source, not by list order. Four trips:

From your employer. Form 16, which arrives as two PDFs: Part A from TRACES and Part B from payroll (here is what they are and how to combine them), plus your payslips. If tax was deducted on income other than salary, such as bank interest or freelance fees, the deductor issues Form 16A for that.

From the e-filing portal itself. Form 26AS, the tax credit statement recording every rupee of TDS deposited against your PAN, and the AIS, the Annual Information Statement, which is the department's own record of income it already knows about. Download both before you start and check your other documents against them. A mismatch between Form 16 and 26AS is something to resolve before filing, not after the notice arrives.

From your bank. Statements for every account, and interest certificates: savings interest and FD interest are taxable, and the AIS usually already lists them. If you have a home loan, the housing loan interest certificate is what supports the deduction.

From your own drawer. Rent receipts and the rental agreement if you claim HRA, receipts for donations, and premium or investment receipts: LIC, ULIP, PPF, ELSS, the lot.

One folder, one habit

Here is the system that makes next July painless, and it takes ten minutes now:

  1. Make one folder per year, named like itr-fy-2025-26, and put every document above in it as a PDF.
  2. Paper receipts become PDFs. Rent receipts and donation receipts are usually paper. Photograph them and run the photos through the image to PDF converter, so each receipt is a document rather than a JPEG lost in your camera roll.
  3. Merge each category into one file. Twelve rent receipts as rent-receipts-fy2025-26.pdf beats twelve files named IMG_4021.pdf. The PDF merger does this in seconds.
  4. If a portal needs them small, compress to the limit. CA portals and bank loan portals often cap uploads. The exact-size PDF compressor targets the stated limit directly instead of making you guess with a quality slider.

The reason to do this with browser-only tools is the same reason the Form 16 guide gives: these documents carry your PAN, your full salary, your bank balances and your investments. The first page of results for "merge PDF" is full of sites that upload your file to their server first. Every Docexp tool runs entirely in your browser, and there is no server to receive the file. Switch off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.

Missed the 31 July date? You still have a window

The department's return-filing FAQs state it plainly for this year:

"a belated return for Assessment Year (AY) 2026 –27 may be furnished on or before 31st December 2026"

A belated return can carry a late-filing fee and interest where tax is due, so later is worse than sooner. But the door is open until 31 December 2026, and the document checklist is identical. If you are reading this in the panic after the due date: gather the folder above, file belated, done.

Frequently asked questions

Do I upload Form 16 to the income tax portal?

No. The return forms are annexure-less by the department's own statement quoted above; there is no slot for any attachment. You read the figures from Form 16 into the return, and much of it now arrives pre-filled from the same data.

What is the difference between Form 26AS and AIS?

Form 26AS is the tax credit statement: TDS and taxes deposited against your PAN. The AIS is broader, the department's record of the income and financial transactions it already knows about. Check your return against both; the department will.

My employer sent Form 16 as two separate PDFs. Is something missing?

No, that is how it always arrives. Part A comes from the TRACES system and Part B from your employer's payroll. This guide explains the two parts and how to combine them into one file for your records.

How long should I keep these documents after filing?

Keep the whole year's folder, permanently if storage is free, and a folder of PDFs is free. The official list exists precisely because the tax authorities can ask you to produce these documents during an assessment or inquiry, which can arrive well after the filing year.

I don't have one of the listed documents. Can I still file?

The list is conditional; "if applicable" appears in the department's own wording. No rent means no rent receipts. What you should not skip: Form 26AS and the AIS, because they are the department's side of the story and they are two clicks away on the portal.

Every Docexp tool runs in your browser, and your files are never uploaded to any server. For the folder that holds your PAN, your salary and your bank statements, that is not a feature. It is the point.
